In the UK around 30 varierties of strawberries are grown, half of all of the strawberries produced, are grown in Kent. Lower Ladysden Farm can be found in the countryside just outside of Goudhurst and is a family run farm. They have a farmshop on site where you can buy thier produce or alternatively you can pick your own!
The farm has a variety of fresh produce on offer with vast polytunnels that house rows of raised strawberry plants as well as raspberries, asparagus and other seasonal fruit and veg. They have a well signposted entrance that leads you into their carparking area. Immediately the farm shop can be seen where you can wander over to have a look at what they have on offer. If you want to pick your own strawberries then you have to purchase a punnet at the counter. For a regular sized punnet it cost £6. Initially we thought that this was a little expensive but were surprised at how much we got for our money.

As you exit the farm shop the polytunnels are a short walk away and you are directed to a row in which you can pick your fruit from. There were a lot of ripe strawberries ready for picking that had a shine in which those from a supermarket do not. We realised that if we wanted to get the most for our money we had to strategically select the ones we wanted. Hunting for the larger strawberries would have quickly filled up the punnet but by trying to pick out a few smaller ones to fill in the gaps we made the most of every space. Having got home and washed our strawberries ready for eating we got to see exactly how many we had got in our punnet, 63 strawberries to be precise! We didn’t overfill our punnet so this came as a shock but it goes to show how much of a difference a range of sizes made.

It was a satisfying experience to select your own produce from plant to table knowing where it had been grown and the proof definitely was in the pudding! The taste was a lot different to the ones we normally buy during our weekly shop. They were a lot sweeter than others which can be sharp at times. Overall, a visit to Lower Ladysden Farm is a fun afternoon out in which you can take home your locally grown produce to enjoy.
